A protester threw a shoe at Wen Jiabao

Mr Wen has faced protests throughout his UK visit. A protester threw a shoe at Wen Jiabao, the Chinese Premier,as he delivered a speech on the global economy at Cambridge University on February 2, 2009.

Mr Wen was coming to the last part of his address when a young Western-looking man with dark hair stood up, blew a whistle and shouted: “How can the university prostitute itself with this dictator? How can you listen to these lies?”

The man, who appeared to be in his early twenties, then took off his heavy shoe and threw it at the stage missing the Premier by a few feet.

“Stand up and protest, you're not challenging him,” he shouted in a European accent as he was bundled out of the room by security staff.

Mr Wen then reprimanded the protester as more security guards moved on to the stage before he finished his speech.

“This despicable behaviour cannot stand in the way of friendship between China and the UK,” he said.

Shoe-throwing as an act of protest was popularised in December by Muntadhar al-Zeidi, an Iraqi journalist, who threw his brogues at George W. Bush, the former American president. He missed with both attempts but was arrested by Iraqi security forces.

Security was tight in the build up to the speech with scores of Chinese secret service agents monitoring the audience. The guests who heard Mr Jibao speak were searched and passed through metal detractors as they entered the room.

Police kept demonstrators away from the Premier as he arrived to speak. A group of objecting to Chinese policy in Tibet and raising concerns about human rights in China were penned in a corner about 50 yards from the entrance.

“The strength of the relationship between China and Britain will be a pivotal force in helping us through the downturn and a powerful driving force behind our future growth and prosperity,” he said.

You Can't Use Chinese Mobiles After April 2009

Are you using a Unbranded Chinese mobile without having IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity)? You can't use that kind of mobilephones after this April. All mobile phone service users have been directed by the Department of Telecom (DoT) to disconnect these phones.A The telecom companies will disable connections that use Chinese mobile handsets. The mobile phone companies have undertaken to acquire the necessary equipment to track these phones by April 15 and discontinue their services thereafter - a process that is expected to take another 15 days, that is, by April 30.

IMEI helps the authorities identify the handset used to make a call on the GSM network, while the electronic serial number (ESN) is used for the CDMA network.

Following the DoT directive, telecom operators have already started alerting their customers to stop using illegal handsets.

'Airtel has always been compliant. We will comply with the authorities and bar the services as required,' Bharti Airtel deputy chief executive Sanjay Kapoor told IANS.

Added Gurdeep Singh, chief executive of another telecom operator Aircel: 'We will follow the timeline and have already intimidated our customers regarding the same. Though our customers are important, compliance is the topmost priority.'

Earlier, the DoT had extended the deadline for telecom operators to disconnect services to Chinese handsets from March 1 to March 31.

Now it has further been extended to April 13.

Telecom officials said this time they would stick to the deadline.
The decision would affect nearly 2.5 crore handsets, with most of them being Chinese-made.

The government's move came after investigating agencies found that terrorists have been using non-IMEI mobile phones for their communications.

An Iraqi journalist was wrestled to the floor by security guards after he called Mr Bush "a dog" and threw his footwear, just missing the president.

The US president has now continued to Afghanistan to inspect troops there.

He arrived before dawn at Bagram air force base, and is due to hold talks with President Hamid Karzai.

Earlier in Baghdad, Mr Bush and Iraqi PM Nouri Maliki signed the new security agreement between their countries.

The pact calls for US troops to leave Iraq in 2011 - eight years after the 2003 invasion that has in part defined the Bush presidency.

Speaking just over five weeks before he hands over power to Barack Obama, Mr Bush also said the war in Iraq was not over and more work remained to be done.

His previously unannounced visit came a day after Defence Secretary Robert Gates told US troops the Iraq mission was in its "endgame".

Journalist throws shoe at P. Chidambaram in New Delhi

In what is India’s first “Shoegate” incident, a journalist hurled a shoe at Home Minister P Chidambaram during a press conference at the AICC headquarters in New Delhi on Tuesday.

Jarnail Singh, a journalist working for a Hindi daily, took the drastic step to protest the clean chit given by the CBI to Congress leader Jagdish Tytler, who is an accused in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots case. Earlier this month, the CBI had sought the Supreme Court’s permission to close the case against Tytler.

A bemused Chidambaram, who took evasive action to avoid being hit, said “gently, gently” as security personnel whisked Singh away. “Let not the action of one emotional person hijack the entire press conference. I have answered his questions to the best of my ability,” he added.

Sony C510: the cheapest Cyber-Shots phones in Sony’s portfolio

The Sony Ericsson C510 is a Cyber-shot phone with a mere 3.2-megapixels of camera capability.Sony has launched it Sony C510 Cyber-Shot phone in India. Priced at Rs 12,195, the Sony C510 Cyber-Shot phone is one of the cheapest Cyber-Shots phones in Sony’s portfolio.

Looks and ergonomics present me with some very familiar Sony Ericsson dilemmas though. Overall, this is a neat and light phone for the pocket measuring 107mm tall, 47mm wide and 12.5mm thick. It weighs just 92g. The annoying side-mounted power connector continues to look incongruous but worse, the headset connector that shares the same proprietary socket adds 15mm of width to the phone and makes carrying it in a slim pocket nigh on impossible.

Sony Ericsson has fitted a relatively large screen into this handset and compromised the numberpad in doing so. The 2.3in screen looks sharp and bright, its 320 x 240 pixels presenting no problems.

The numberpad keys are wide enough but they are thin, and in general, the button build quality isn't quite up to Sony Ericsson's usual high standard. Well, this is a mid-range handset after all and maybe a compromise has been made here to keep costs down.

Between screen and keyboard a bank of six buttons provides access to Call and End, the two softmenus, Clear and Sony Ericsson's superb Activity menu - providing a series of tabbed windows that take you to reminders, running apps for quick switching, user-defined on-phone shortcuts and Internet shortcuts.

The problem with these keys is again their size. The Call and End keys are weeny, rounded buttons at the outer ends of this bank. The inner buttons bevel inwards so that they have a distinctive feel but if your fingers are chunky, you may struggle for accuracy.

The four edges of the square navigation key also have shortcut functions. Out of the box, these are set to Media, Contacts, Profiles and Messaging but you can change them all as you see fit. Sony Ericsson always does well in terms of providing shortcuts for getting at phone features and the C510 replicates what I've seen many times before in this respect. It is great, if very samey.
